In the 1940s in a small town called Dollarton in British Columbia, just north of Vancouver, an obscure event in literary history occurred when a fascinating relationship developed between two men, Charles Stansfeld Jones a.k.a. Frater Achad, a British occultist and the novelist Malcolm Lowry. This union took place during the period in which Lowry was writing his masterpiece Under the Volcano.

Lowry was concerned principally with “the forces in man which cause him to be terrified of himself” and through his dual lifetime passions – writing and drinking, he expresses how “the agonies of the drunkard find their most accurate poetic analogue in the agonies of the mystic who has abused his powers.”
